Fort Yashwantgad: A Coastal Chronicle in Stone
Fort Yashwantgad, or Redi Fort, proudly sits atop a hill along the Arabian Sea in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. Completed between 1707 and 1713 in the Maratha period under the guidance of Admiral Kanhoji Angre, this seafort protected the mouth of Rajapur Creek strategically. Composed of sturdy black basalt rock, its defensive design once had 17 bastions and a deep dry moat on three sides. Though partly destroyed and taken over by nature, you are still able to pass through its four gates of entry, visit the inner sanctum (Balekilla), and be amazed at ancient water works and corridors taken over by tree roots. Echoes of Empires: A Tale of Conflict and Legacy
The fort walls have witnessed endless history. First was the fort of the Marathas, seized in 1746 by the Portuguese following an abortive Maratha attempt to poison the fish supply of the garrison. Early conservation efforts are now underway to protect and develop this historic gem for cultural tourism. It was taken for a short while by the Sawant clan by a treaty, and thereafter it was taken by the British in 1765. In 1890, the British sold off the land in which the fort was located but the fort itself was still owned by the state.
